Stand Up Comedy - A Thriving Platform in Nigerian Entertainment

Going back to the 80's era, a few sitcom programmes were aired on TV such as Basi & Co, Second chance, The New Masquerade, Koko Close, which thrilled the Nigerian viewers, especially Lagosians with various hilarious episodes. Sitcom was definitely "it". However, one man decided to take the bull by the horn and introduce stand up comedy to the Nigerian populace. Opa Benson's, "Nite of a thousand laughs" which made its debut on to the entertainment scene on October 1st 1995, made the desired impact, which some doubting Thomases never believed could happen. It became a regular event with its acceptability gaining more grounds over time.

Various comedians came together under this platform to reel out rib cracking jokes. However, Tee- A (Babatunde Adewale), decided to take comedy to a higher dimension and was the first to stage a one man comedy show in the country, with the slogan "Live N Naked". Other comedians seeing the endless possibilities such individual shows created followed suit. Ayo Makun's "A.Y Live", Bright Okpocha's "Basket mouth uncensored", Julius Agwu's "Crack ya ribs" have become regular shows. Comedians such as Owen gee, Koffi, Gordons, I go die, Teju baby face, Gbenga Adeyinka the first, Basorge Tara jnr have graced their events.

On an annual basis, new comedians on the block are inducted into the comedy world to join the old members. They proudly refer to themselves as "Comedians of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with Alleluya Atuyota Akporobomeriere a.k.a Ali Baba as their Grand commander in chief. A few females have carved niches for themselves in this male dominating field such as Princess, Mandy, Lepacious Bose, and Helen Paul a.k.a tatafo. Ayo Makun, beside his regular stand up comedy event has gone a step further in his noble quest to discover young talented comedians seeking the opportunity to jump start a potential stand up comedy career. His monthly talent show coupled with his TV programme "The A.Y.show" has witnessed young people coming into the field. Bumi Davies (though not a comedian) organises the "Stand up Nigeria" monthly stand up comedy show which entertains Nigerians as well.

Fame and fortune have accompanied these comedians with some being engaged as comperes in corporate/social events, and also endorsing companies products by way of adverts for eg Hollandia Milk (Ali Baba, Julius Agwu), and Glo ( Basket mouth). Corporate bodies even sponsor these stand up comedy shows. A better life has been guaranteed for comedians who possess the laughter medicine and are skilled in administering sufficient dosages of it to the audience. Besides the creeping threat of re-cycled jokes which some comedians are kicking against, and the need for other states to become beneficiaries of the laughter sphere, stand up comedy has not done badly in the Nigerian entertainment circuit and with certitude is here to stay!

Best Comedy Movies of 2009

Some most-expected drama movies and action movies failed to draw audiences to the theater, but the comedies of 2009 were well able to do good box office business. Perhaps the recession and economic downturn make people seek laughter during these stress-filled times. Though a few of the comedies of 2009 didn't have that aura which makes them in the list of funniest movies ever, except Hangover, they somehow kept the box office ringing.

Here is my list of the best comedy movies of 2009:

The Hangover:

This movie by Warner Bros Pictures has earned good money, but not, off course like Avatar. Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, and Ed Helms in 'The Hangover' could keep you laughing for along time. The movie received great reviews and appreciation from different corners of the world. It has been a smash hit worldwide. The film could set a new record for an R-rated comedy, crashing the record set by Beverly Hills Cop nearly 25 years ago. A loud funny movie that every bachelor who wishes to go for a wild bachelors party must watch.

Zombieland:

Columbia Pictures released this apocalyptic zombie film which put up stiff competition to 'The Hangover'. The way Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg fight each other is really hysterical. A smart script, good acting by newcomers like Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin add flavor to the tone of this comedy. It is a kind of perfect escape from reality and you will have fun watching this movie at home with friends.

Fantastic Mr. Fox:

This is a Fox Searchlight release and is directed by Wes Anderson. Although the trailer didn't raise that much initial interest with the audiences, the movie didn't disappoint at the theater. There is nothing too freaky in the plot, and the movie comes to life as you watch it. This is an animated film for adults as the humor is a bit too much over the heads of the kid crowd. A witty and highly entertaining movie for the 2009 movie year!

Up:

This is another animated movie from Disney/Pixar. Millions already have fallen in love with the old fellow who flies with balloons and the small obnoxious kid explorer who accompanies the old man on this adventure. The movie is touching and funny, and the animation is gorgeous to look at. It takes you on an emotional journey as well as keeps tickling your funny side to make you stick to the screen.

500 Days of Summer:

Another release from Fox Searchlight. This is a romantic comedy and one of the best intelligent romantic comedies of the 2009 film year! Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a hard working greeting card writer who believes in love at first sight while Zooey Deschanel, a free-spirited woman, doesn't. Find out what clicks between the two in this comedy.

Some other comedy movies worth watching of 2009 are 'The Proposal', 'The Informant' and 'Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.' All should not disappoint.

The Real Life of comedy TV

If you are paying attention to the news recently, you may experience a little 'a circus three. It seems that news cable is able to take all the questions, if Tiger Woods or fraud of the weather or natural disasters, disasters, and extending out well beyond a single news cycle. You might feel like too much and too little learning at the same time, if the subject at hand for the recent decision of Obama or events that happened in the houseand the Senate. And in an age where people are a bit 'worried about the future of jobs and the country in general, seems a bit' useless for all worked up about some gossip that somehow manages, in every TV News Satellite Network concealed from time to time.

If you watch the news, you have some different options at this time. You can very excited or worried about the communication status of current events, you can choose to readNewspapers and other media information, or you can have a funny way to find news on the state of the world does, but managed to get your data. For a number of people, it seems that this second option is by far better lately, more and more shows, make it easy not only laugh, as the news satellite, but also to the fact that many news sources say 24 hours that do not seem well whatall.

For a show that comedy has a little 'more, but it seems to provide political analysis focuses, not more than HBO, where Bill Maher tries to continue his program, now on the air almost a decade. "Real Time with Bill Maher" has replaced the network for "Politically Incorrect", which in difficulty after a couple of observations on 11 September, which was not insensitive, they were not too serious of an outraged public are taken. Today, Maher is still opinionated, butits setting is independent on the basis of the same period of the prospectus.

But there are opportunities to play much more with the current state of political affairs satellite TV, and even inform their public of what is really happening in the world. For a political color, the more obvious mistakes that everyone is covering personalities, politicians have in the last 24 hours, there is the twin titans of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" and "The Colbert Report."Sometimes it might seem as if Glen Beck is about a personification of Colbert and not otherwise. And, of course, Jon Stewart still enjoy watching the satellite TV viewers across the country with his increasingly disturbed, what is really happening in politics.

But perhaps prefer a less partisan how ridiculous is the current media advertising campaign. There is no electricity, and digest its weekly round-up of all eventsMedia "infomania". Because electricity can not see on television, but also controlled the media online, if it succeeded in its weekly report that it feels much more like a fun way, in front of the bizarre world of the media, that each week. And unlike many other shows satellite TV, have succeeded in the hilarity of current events without being too emotional or excited to report the passing seasons.
