Movie Review - Gone (2012) (PG-13)

The Power of Observation

Gone is a surprisingly engaging thriller, in large part because of its lead character, a young woman who finds herself in a situation which requires the use of her wits and keen powers of observation. Her name is Jill (Amanda Seyfried). A year ago, she narrowly escaped the clutches of a serial killer who kidnapped her, gagged and bound her with duct tape, and dragged her to a hole in a desolate area of a sprawling forest just outside Portland. Now her sister, a college student named Molly (Emily Wickersham), has gone missing. Jill is convinced that her kidnapper is responsible; he must have come back for her, but because she was working the night shift at a local diner, he took Molly instead. Jill must find him before he kills Molly and buries her at the bottom of that hole, right alongside several other missing girls.

The odds are not in Jill's favor, which adds tremendous interest to the story. After she escaped, Jill came forward to the police with no physical evidence, no signs of bodily harm such as defensive wounds or sexual assault, and no description of her kidnapper. She claims she was abducted while she was still in bed, and yet there was no evidence of forced entry into her home. The experience, according to the police, was all in her head - a break with reality following a recent personal tragedy. As a result, she was involuntarily institutionalized for several months and forced to start a regiment of psychiatric medication. Adding insult to injury, it's widely known that Molly is a recovering alcoholic. It's not inconceivable that her disappearance is because of a sudden relapse.

Even after institutionalization and mandated therapy sessions, and despite Molly's reputation, Jill is sticking to her story. She has been a thorn in the side of the local police, always coming at them with reports of other missing girls, which she has been keeping track of. Molly's disappearance has made her an even bigger pain. The only cop who's willing to consider the possibility that Jill is telling the truth is the new recruit, Peter Hood (Wes Bentley); he not only gives her his card, he also lets her program her number into his cell phone. But even then, Jill quickly realizes that only she can save her sister. And so, in defiance of the authorities, she arms herself and begins a one-woman city-wide investigation, one that will inevitably lead her back to the forest she was taken to a year earlier.

As unoriginal as the plot admittedly is, there's something to be said for the way Seyfried's character is developed. Jill's kidnapping, while understandably traumatic, has taught her to be aware of her surroundings. She pays attention to the smallest of details, from the fact that Molly was last seen wearing a pajama top and boxers to their color and pattern. She immediately notices that (a) all of Molly's schoolbooks remain on the kitchen table, despite the fact that she had an important final exam that very day, and (b) one of Molly's ear studs is on the floor. She knows to keep in contact with associates and friends, including Molly's boyfriend (Sebastian Stan). She proves herself amazingly resourceful and cunning, not just in how she gets leads but also in the way she questions the people she comes across, from neighbors to storeowners to random strangers on the street.

There's a fascinating paradox at work, here: Jill uses her brains in a situation she's emotionally vested in. There's no denying that, above all else, painful memories of her own kidnapping are motivating her. All the same, she understands that locating Molly and bringing her abductor to justice requires a clear head and the ability to reason. It's not simply a matter of locating them both; it's also a matter of evading the police, who are now after her. If it were strictly an emotional reaction on her part, if she was nothing more than a crazed vigilante with a gun, we would have no reason to invest in her. At least, not as much. Perhaps the mystery of Molly's disappearance would be enough to keep us going.

And speaking of mystery, another one of the film's redeeming aspects is its complete lack of a plot twist. I went into this film believing it not only that it would be a routine thriller, but also that I already had the identity of the kidnapper figured out. How wrong I was. And how happy I was to be proven wrong. This is not one of those films that springs a clever yet implausible revelation on the audience. There's a definite payoff that comes from a legitimate series of clues. As for the ending itself, I admit that I initially resisted it, for it seemed that there was little in the way of a logical explanation and too much in the way of emotional resolution. Now that think back on it, I'm coming more and more to the realization that the ending of Gone is appropriate. Not very likely, but appropriate nonetheless.

Movie Review - New Year's Eve (2011) (PG-13)

A Romcom for Auld Lang Syne

Garry Marshall's New Year's Eve is ostensibly a sequel to last year's Valentine's Day, a film I was very critical of for its surplus of subplots, overabundance of characters, and ceaseless intercutting. I described it as "a romantic comedy with Attention Deficit Disorder." I could easily make the same argument for New Year's Eve, and yet I feel much more forgiving this time. It's mushy, routinely implausible, a little too coincidental, and often times highly predictable, and yet I found the subplots a lot easier to keep track of, I could invest in more of the characters, and in some instances, I was genuinely touched. Yes, this is yet another instance of me going easy on a romantic comedy. If you've read my reviews, then it's your own fault for not seeing this coming a mile away.

Unabashed star vehicles, both films are a series of intercut vignettes taking place over the course of one day. All feature a number of characters whose lives are, to some degree, interconnected. But there are some key differences. For one thing, whereas Valentine's Day took place in Los Angeles, New Year's Eve takes place in New York City. This makes perfect sense. Where else to be on the last day of the year than in New York, specifically Times Square? Furthermore, although the film once again features Jessica Biel, Ashton Kutcher, and Hector Elizondo (a veteran of Marshall's films), they play different characters than the ones they played in Valentine's Day. The biggest difference is that, while the previous film focused almost exclusively on romantic relationships, this one expands its horizons to include family and friends.

The best place to start is with Claire Morgan (Hilary Swank), who has recently been appointed Vice President of the Times Square Alliance. Quite simply, her job is to make sure the ball in Times Square drops on schedule. She wants to make a good impression, although she's understandably edgy. There to support her is her friend, a security guard named Brendan (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges). As would be expected, things don't go smoothly; as the ball is being raised into position, several of its 3,000 LEDs suddenly go out. Everything grinds to a halt. Claire is forced to make a speech to the spectators on Times Square, and while it was a bit sentimental, perhaps even out of place, it was nice to hear. After a while, it becomes apparent that the only one who can fix it is a Russian electrician named Kominsky (Elizondo), who everyone refers to in nervous whispers.

Meanwhile, a professional caterer named Laura (Katherine Heigl) is busy preparing for a New Year's Eve bash. Into her life reenters a music superstar named Jensen (Jon Bon Jovi), who's set to perform at a concert in the middle of Times Square. The two were supposed to get married a while back, but he got cold feet at the last second and split. He has been regretting his decision ever since, and he wants her to give him a second chance. Understandably, Laura isn't as ready to put the past behind her. Hovering around Jensen like a cat in heat is Laura's sous chef, Ava (Sofia Vergara). Her bouncy enthusiasm is exaggerated enough to be amusing but not so exaggerated that she seems like a hyperactive child.

And now, a quick rundown of the remaining subplots. A courier named Paul (Zac Efron) helps a timid woman named Ingrid (Michelle Pfeiffer) cross off items on a list she has made. Paul's best friend, a lovelorn New Year's hater named Randy (Kutcher) becomes trapped in an elevator with a young woman named Elise (Lea Michele), one of Jensen's backup singers. A single mom named Kim (Sarah Jessica Parker) must find her runaway teenage daughter, Hailey (Abigail Breslin), who desperately wants to have a New Year's kiss with a boy from school that she likes.

A man named Stan (Robert De Niro) lies in a hospital bed dying of cancer; his final wish is to be taken to the roof so that he can watch the ball drop one last time. At his side is a nurse named Aimee (Halle Berry). A man named Sam (Josh Duhamel) gets stranded in Connecticut after a wedding and is forced to hitch a ride with a family in an RV. He has to make it to New York City in time to give a speech, and possibly reunite with a woman he met on New Year's Eve a year ago. Finally, two pregnant couples - one played by Biel and Seth Meyers - are on the verge of delivery; it becomes a competition, as the first to give birth on New Year's Day with a $25,000 cash prize from the hospital. A few of these characters are connected in some way, although I leave it to you to discover how.

Of all the film's subplots, the one I liked the least was the one with Biel and Meyers. I don't know - something about turning impending birth into a contest doesn't sit well with me. Without it, however, we would not have Carla Gugino, which in turn would mean the loss of an outtake played during the end credits. To describe it would only ruin its hilarity. As for the other subplots, they're about as good as they can possibly be given their brevity and innate implausibility. I've long since learned to expect this from romantic comedies, which is why I'll often accept them for being exactly what they are. New Year's Eve imparts no wisdom about life and love. It's just what it is: A lighthearted, uncomplicated, feel-good date movie. Need it be anything more?

Although Chris never officially studied film, film theory, or even journalism in college, his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Creative Writing has taught him to appreciate story, character, and the imagination - all aspects that apply to the movies, and if there's anything his years of living in Los Angeles has guaranteed him, exposure to movies would be at the top of the list. He has always appreciated the art of filmmaking, but it wasn't until 2006 that he began writing reviews on various websites for new releases. Still residing in L.A., his reviews can be read at his website, http://www.atatheaternearyou.net.

Every Child Is Special: A Movie Review

Every Child Is Special is probably my first Bollywood movie. (I do not count Slumdog Millionaire because I have watched it only in parts and have not even gotten to the ending, haha.) Anyway, Every Child Is Special is a Hindi drama film released in 2007 (Taare Zameen Par, translation: Stars On Earth) produced and directed by Aamir Khan. It tells about a boy, Ishaan Awasthi, who was always getting in trouble at school for being so misbehaving and out of focus from his lessons. Too often, he would be caught by his teacher daydreaming and getting low grades. Because of this, his father sent him to boarding school, all alone and homesick with the hope of disciplining him. But the academic status of Ishaan did still not improve. Instead, he became withdrawn and lonely, far from the Ishaan who was active and fun-loving. Then came a new art teacher who would just change the way Ishaan would act towards school and learn to appreciate himself even more.

How can I not love this movie? Darsheel Safary is perfect for the role of Ishaan Awasthi. Safary, with his innocent eyes and face, made me laugh with his funny antics and at the same time rend my heart as he goes through the agony of enduring boarding school alone and away from his parents. From start to finish, the movie gripped my attention, and the musical portions added to my fascination. I cannot speak about the technical aspects of film-making as I am not knowledgeable of such, but for an easy to please movie fan like me, Every Child Is Special is one heart-touching movie.

***SPOILER ALERT***

Every Child Is Special is an eye opener as to the worth and significance of every child. The story deals with an issue that is as real as it is unrecognized - dyslexia. I first knew about dyslexia in the book, Pearl Harbor by Randall Wallace, but the movie has increased my education on this kind of ailment.

Every Child Is Special is a movie that can tug the heartstrings and at the same time bring hope that having dyslexia is not a desperate situation. Family support, patience, and love are central themes in this story, plus the primary focus on painting and art. The theory on multiple intelligences in education plays a major role in this movie and can be very informative to teachers and parents alike.

I really love this movie and I highly recommend this to everyone. My sister has also been nagging me to watch The Three Idiots. Maybe, tonight.

5 stars.

The West Wing (DVD) Review

Premiering in September 1999, the original NBC series The West Wing built an instant cult following with its seemingly realistic weekly excursions into the inner sanctums of the White House. The series became such a hit that some pollsters claimed that certain people actually believed Jed Bartlet was the real president (although, if true, this is more of a negative reflection on the intelligence of the electorate, and not necessarily an indication of West Wing's realism). But regardless, the truth of the matter is that West Wing definitely strikes a chord with certain audiences, providing entertaining brew of action, suspense, and drama on a weekly basis...

Seasoned Hollywood actor Martin Sheen plays the lead role of President Jed Bartlet. The day-to-day affairs of Bartlet's administration are run by a number of individuals who surround him, among them are: Claudia "C.J." Cregg (Allison Janney), Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford), Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe), Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff), Leo McGarry (John Spencer), and Charlie Young (Dule Hill). West Wing follows these dedicated staffers as they work extended hours behind-the-scenes to help keep the White House running smoothly. Along the way, the stress of the job and the characters' personal lives make for an interesting glimpse into what many believe is an accurate portrayal of a real-life White House administration...

The West Wing DVD offers a number of dramatic episodes including the series premiere in which we meet each of the recurring characters for the first time. The White House has their daily routine interrupted when President Bartlet falls off his bike, and Sam realizes the girl he picked in a bar the previous evening was a high-priced prostitute. Meanwhile, several members of the administration become embroiled in an ongoing feud with the "religious right," prompting President Bartlet to personally condemn a group of fundamentalists known as "The Lambs of God"... Other notable episodes from Season 1 include "The Crackpots and These Women" in which administration staffers spend their day listening to a number of crackpot, single-issue groups lobbying for federal favors, and "Take This Sabbath Day" in which President Bartlet grapples with the decision to commute the death sentence of a convicted killer following a Supreme Court ruling upholding his sentence...

Review of the Lyle Lovett CD Step Inside This House

One word describes the CD Step Inside This House from Lyle Lovett... AWESOME!

The CD kicks off with a great track, Bears, that I suspect will be heard on radio stations everywhere, and deservedly so. It really is a very nice track.

Step Inside This House has a nicely varied, mix of Bears tracks that are very well written songs by this clearly gifted artist. With many of the songs displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Seemingly drawing from what I can only imagine are him own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

Listen and I think you'll agree that the song choices are excellent, the production is outstanding and Lyle Lovett is clearly in top form.

While this entire album is outstanding some of my favorites are track 3 - disc 1 - Step Inside This House, track 5 - disc 2 - Babes In The Woods, and track 10 - disc 2 - Texas River Song

My Bonus Pick, and the one that got Sore [...as in "Stuck On REpeat"] is track 1 - Disc 1 - Bears. Good stuff!

First Love - Nepali Movie Review

Without the chain of Nepalese films in digital layout, was First Love, August 6 throughout the country published. The film has about 8 million rupees in the first week of its release, according to the production and distribution of the film. The source also said there was a transaction record for a Nepalese films. For two weeks there is an opponent of Nepal, but in the third week he had to compete with two films, oneHis Alok Nembang is Kohi Mero and the other, Bikash Acharya is the Nai Nabhannu Both movies were good assessment of the public, so it's not wrong to say that first love has had a hard time drawing viewers.

The first love is through Simosh Sunuwar, a young and dedicated, the son of the famous folk singer and radio personality, the late Pandav Sunuwar turns. Mission Paisa Simosh first feature film, which was published in 2009. And 'actress Nisha Adhikari started in the worldNepalese films. Nisha has also acted in First Love, the girl who plays the character is in love with Aryan Sigdel. He is her first love, beyond love Karma (Mahesh Shakya) Nisha, but his love is one-sided. Similarly, falls in love with Richa Sharma Binay Shrestha, after a meeting with her. This is a very thin film in the situation, not unlike many others we have seen.

The film revolves around these five people who attend the same school, this film shows veryon college life in the city. Some of the scenes in this film the feeling as if they were derived from other movies. This is not news for many Nepalese, and for the problem, all the theaters around the world. However, considering the scenes of the film and photography, with a wonderful use of the camera. What makes the viewer uncomfortable, the action is otherwise well. The scene, as Richa Binay rape and then is forgiven and when Nisha Aryan decidesKarma, who sacrificed everything for her seems idealistic.

These Nepalese film to deliver a message and this is the first love of the beautiful love that has a wrong message to viewers. Wounded, especially in cases where people have gone through the cruelty of his first love, has this message does not seem fair.

The rape scene in the film has been much discussed, and writers of history to justify a monstrous crime was charged,on the screen. And 'responsibilities and director of the narrator, in contemplation of take the idea of mass, when you create a scene on a fragile entity.
