Octagon House Floor Plan - The curiosity of an eight-sided house

The story behind the Octagon House was that Mr. Richards to build a promise to his wife, Eliza, to her beautiful home in the Midwest.

John Richards was probably influencedfrom fellow designers, Orson Fowler, who was a leading spokesman for the construction of eight houses on one side. At that time, the octagon house was is billed as a pretty efficient, economic and aesthetic housing design dates back to the ancient Roman architect.

There were at least 36 houses in the octagonal house built in 1844 to 1905. All these houses were in Wisconsin. Octagonal houses continue to be built by the CivilWar. After this period, most of octagonal houses were either demolished or converted until they lost their original shape.

John Richards Octagon House was given to the Watertown Historical Society in 1938. The house has been preserved in almost mint condition and with no electricity, no modern plumbing and no telephone - just as it was, as Mr. Richards and his wife lived in the 1850s.

Tours of the Octagon House can be made daily from MayOctober and signs are posted in Watertown. Summer hours are from 10 to 4 pm and 11 clock to 3 clock after Labor Day. Admission is $ 7 for adults, $ 6 for AAA members, $ 6 for children ages 6 to 12 and children under 6 are free.
